Training Overview
ASIST Workshop
(Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
ASIST teaches participants to recognize and intervene with individuals at risk of suicide. It is applicable to diverse audiences, requiring no formal background. It is a highly interactive workshop that teaches the skill to intervene when someone may be at risk for suicide to help them to stay safe for now. It is often referred to as suicide first aid.
Format: In-person Time: 2 days (8:30 - 4:30) Participant limit: 30 persons
SafeTALK: Suicide Alertness Training
Is a 3 hour training that equips community members to recognize and connect individuals with suicidal thoughts to intervention resources, such as caregivers with ASIST Skills. SafeTALK is designed for up to 30 participants, accessible to all, and customizable to different groups. Ideal for staff in human services agencies.
Format: In-person Time: 3 to 3.5 hours Participant limit: 30 persons
Trainings for School Personnel
Suicide Safety for School Staff (SST) is designed to meet the basic awareness needs of school administrators, faculty and staff. Emphasis is on recognizing warning signs, clarifying the referral process in place at school, and making a warm handoff.
Format: Virtual or In-person Time: 60-90 minutes Participant limit: Unlimited
Helping Students at Risk for Suicide (HSAR) is designed as professional development for school-based mental health and student services professionals. It incorporates the process of assessing, intervening, safety planning, and follow up when there is a concern that a student may be at risk for suicide.
Format: Virtual or In-person Time: 6 hours Participant limit: 40 persons
QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer
- One-hour training teaching three simple steps to save a life from suicide.
- Similar to CPR, equipping individuals to recognize warning signs and refer someone to help.
Youth Mental Health First Aid
- 8-hour course for individuals 18 and older, offering an action plan to help young people (ages 12-18) with mental health or substance use problems.
- Recommended for teachers, coaches, social workers, faith leaders, and caring citizens.
Suicide Safety for Teachers
- 1-hour in-person training meeting basic suicide prevention awareness needs for school faculty and staff.
- Covers warning signs, faculty roles, school procedures, addressing suicide in the classroom, and reinforcing protective factors.
